New parent carer group has first meeting in Selby

A new Selby district parent carer group set up by local charity Carers’ Resource had its first get-together recently.

Parent carers from the Selby area came along to the event on Tuesday, 20th February at Summit Indoor Adventure, on Scott Road, Selby, where they met and spoke to other parent carers, asked questions, took some time out and had a brew.

It followed a successful launch event held for the group at the end of November last year.

The group is for local parent carers who have a child with additional needs (e.g. learning, physical, behavioural, emotional, mental health), whatever their age, and with or without a diagnosis.

It will meet fortnightly on Tuesdays, 10am-11.30am, at Summit Indoor Adventure.

Carers’ Resource will be inviting guest speakers/professionals to attend the group to provide information and advice on a wide variety of topics.

Amy Morton, a Selby locality carer worker at Carers’ Resource, said: “The first meeting went well. It was a great opportunity to get to know some of the many parent carers that live in the Selby district, listen to them about their caring responsibilities and find out what being a parent carer is like for them.

“I’m looking forward to our upcoming meetings when we will have guest speakers/professionals attending to give advice that will hopefully help parent carers who come along.”

The next meeting is on Tuesday, 5th March, and the guest speaker will be Jo Holloway-Green, a Parent Participation Officer (PPO) for Parent Carer Voice North Yorkshire. A PPO is a person with lived experience of being a SEND parent carer, working with local SEND parents and community organisations to understand and share collective needs and challenges.
