From climbing walls to sailing the high seas – young carers in Craven and Harrogate who look after a parent or sibling enjoyed a special summer of activities – thanks to the generosity of supporters across the district.
Children, some as young as seven, were treated to trips and daring outdoor pursuits.
The Harrogate team’s programme featured 21 trips which were offered to 190 youngsters. A total of 136 young carers attended at least one trip.
And the Craven itinerary included eight special trips; all 60 places were filled and 38 different young carers went on at least one outing.
Activities included climbing and rope swings at High Adventure in Cowling; a two-day sailing experience with the Ocean Youth Trust North off the coast of Northumberland; pottery painting and cupcakes in Harrogate; and a day out at Newby Hall, near Ripon. Some also took part in zorbing in Leeds.
Anne Wells, Fundraising Co-ordinator at Carers’ Resource, says: “There have been some excellent trips and activities organised this summer and they have been a big hit with the young carers.
“The summer holidays can be a long challenging time for young carers and some may struggle to get out and about.
“These days out and special events are a great way for them to try new things and share new experiences, while also helping them keep in touch with their friends, and to give them a break from caring.
“All the activities were kindly funded or made possible in one way or another through support and donations from various community groups, local businesses or individuals. And it’s thanks to them for digging deep in their pockets or running a fundraiser that young carers have had a super summer to remember – we can’t thank you all enough.”
Set up in Harrogate in 1995, Young Carers’ Resource includes a robust service for young carers in Harrogate, Ripon and Craven.
It relies on donations and support includes one-to-one mentoring, youth and after-school clubs.
Young carers also helped design, develop and populate their website which features a gallery of photos of them enjoying trips and activities, and the Awesome blog.
