Where is the Carers Strategy?

The Government’s Carers Strategy is meant to set out what more can be done to support unpaid carers. Consultation on it closed in July 2016. We were told the results would be published by late 2016. We’re still waiting.

In the Commons in December, the then Care Minister said an action plan would be published in January. It’s now February. We’re still waiting.

It’s time to take action. Carers deserve better and we’ve written to all the MPs in our patch today to say as much.

If you agree, please sign and share this petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/209717

Bradford Special Educational Needs and Disabilities consultation

Parent carers and your families – we have had an email to say the number of staff in the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) portage home visiting team in Bradford district could be reduced by 50% under new proposals. The team may also no longer be based centrally.

Details of the proposals can be found here: https://buff.ly/2rZx82c

If you could like to have your say on this issue, please email SENDConsultation@bradford.gov.uk by 28 February or attend one of the public consultation meetings (click on the link for meeting details).

Safer Internet Day

Worried about using the internet? Next week CEO Chris Whiley will be opening Bradford’s Safer Internet Day event and will be talking about how although it’s sensible to be wary of risks associated with the internet, it is an important tool which we need to find ways to use. Saiuqa from our Worth Connecting service will be there to tell you about how we can help you to stay safe on the internet.

The free community event on Tuesday 6th is from 12.30-3.30pm at Carlisle Business Centre in Bradford and you can sign up online here: http://bit.ly/2Eum8MY. Any questions please email alice.bentley@bradford.gov.uk.

Thank you to our knitters

We are so proud of our volunteer knitters who handmade Christmas decorations and sold them raising £2,150 for unpaid carers. Read about our festive fundraiser in the Harrogate Informer’s article: http://bit.ly/2nrqkop.

Our knitters are already making Easter chicks for this spring and we would like to welcome more volunteers on board. If you want to join a knitting group or raise funds for us, please contact events and fundraising co-ordinator Anne Wells at awells@carersresource.org. Thanks to fundraisers and generous donations, we can put on trips and groups for unpaid carers who need a break.

Carers Question Time

Our Carers Question Time at the #CarersRightsDay event on Friday was presented by the wonderful Peg Alexander – TV & Radio Presenter.

Peg, a broadcaster and journalist among much else, gave up her time for free so in return we’re telling you about a couple of social media courses that Peg offers: ‘Making Social Media Work For You’ and ‘Making Phone Videos for Social Media’. Both are very useful courses if you’re looking to improve your social media presence.

The courses are at a discount price for voluntary, community and social enterprise, or other not-for-profit organisations.

For full details visit Peg’s website http://www.pegalexander.com/social-media-training.html

Thanks again Peg!
