What is Carers Week?

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

This year’s Carers Week takes place from 8-14 June and the theme is ‘Making Carers Visible’.

What is Carers’ Resource doing for Carers Week?

Carers Week is usually brought to life by the individuals and organisations that come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

Carers’ Resource is going ahead and planning activities but due to coronavirus most of our events will be held virtually, on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages. Some will be pre-recorded, some live and some interactive.

We want more than ever to celebrate carers and encourage them – you – that you’re playing a crucial part in the lives of your loved ones and also in wider society.

An online Carers Week might exclude some people, so we encourage everyone to give it a go if they can. If this is impossible for you, let us know if they want a call during Carers Week for a chat.

Other opportunities to be united, while separate, include joining us on our sponsored walk, and raising a glass of your favourite drink in honour of carers at noon on 8 June to mark the start of Carers Week.

Dates, times and social media platforms will be confirmed, and more will be added, nearer the time. Check our Facebook and Twitter pages and this page for updates. These are the confirmed events so far:

Parent carer workshops
We will deliver online workshops/sessions, some of which will be pre-recorded, some live, some interactive. There will be a variety of subjects including completing DLA and PIP forms. Join us for a virtual coffee, cake and chat and fun.

Dancing for Wellbeing
Join us for half an hour of chairobics and music, led by experienced dance leader Jackie. We will suggest various common household props that you can use in this gentle and fun workout. Enjoyment guaranteed!

Get crafty
All materials for this session will be provided and sent ahead to you in the post, so please sign up in advance. You will amaze yourself with the end result, which is a surprise for now! No previous skills required. To get involved, contact Catherine Thompson at cthompson@carersresource.org or 07936 368428.

Young carers’ rainbow craft
If you are, or you know someone who is, a young carer (aged under 18) then email young carer worker Chris Windsor a photo of your NHS rainbow artwork so we can use them in a video we are making. Email your creations to cwindsor@carersresource.org by 5pm on 10 June.

Bradford young carers
There are two weekly virtual groups already taking place – one for primary age youngsters and one for high school-age young people. To find out more, email cwindsor@carersresource.org or see the Bradford Young Carers Facebook page.

Harrogate young carers
A game of virtual bingo is being planned for the Utime young carer youth club (secondary age), while those young people who attend Budz (primary age) will go on a virtual treasure hunt. Contact Sarah Beard on sbeard@carersresource.org or 07801 577198 if you would like to take part or have ideas for other virtual groups or activities.

Virtual escape rooms
This “trip” has been planned for the Utime youth club (age 11-18). Eight households can join the session. Follow the challenges and crack the codes to solve the mystery together. To put your name forward for a place, contact Sarah Beard at sbeard@carersresource.org or 07801 577198.

Sponsored walk
It’s our 25th anniversary year and one of our planned activities was to walk 25k as a group on the canal towpath from Shipley to Skipton in May. Some of our staff are instead going to walk 25k during their exercise time during Carers Week and will be gathering sponsorships. Why not join them and send us your photos? You could even get sponsors too. Or just do it for fun. You don’t have to do it all at once, and you don’t have to do the full 25k – just do something around the numbers 2 and 5. Email cmacina@carersresource.org or call 07936 368424 to get involved. You can sponsor our staff via their Just Giving page.
